Meet the Bishop Ordinary

The Rt. Rev. Robert Todd Giffin is the Bishop Ordinary of the DMA. He is the Rector of St. Chad's Anglican Church, San Antonio, Texas, and a member of the House of Bishops of the Anglican Province of America, where he serves on the Provincial Council. He was consecrated a Bishop on October 6, 2012, at the Anglican Church of St. Andrew the Evangelist in Merrillville. On March 25, 2014, he was appointed by Bishop Maternus Kapinga as Ecumenical Canon of the Pro-Cathedral in Kwambe, Diocese of Ruvuma, Anglican Church of Tanzania (ACT). He is a cradle Anglican, having been baptized at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, McLean, Virginia in April of 1971. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a Master of Divinity degree from Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Nashotah, Wisconsin. He is married to the former Norma Jean Bustamante of San Antonio, Texas. Norma Jean serves on the Provincial Council of the Anglican Province of America, as President of the House of Laity of the Anglican Province of America, and is employed by Allergan Pharmaceuticals. They are the parents of three children: Catherine Elizabeth, Maria Christina, and William Royall Giffin. They reside in San Antonio, Texas.

Bishop Giffin has extensive Texas ancestry, and is a direct descendant of six of the original sixteen families of La Villa de San Fernando de Bexar (present day San Antonio), who as Canary Islanders arrived on March 9, 1731 and founded the first municipal government in la Provincia de Tejas. They are Juan Leal Goraz, Juan Leal, Jr. (el mozo), Juan Curbelo, Manuel de Niz, Vicente Alvarez Travieso, and Antonio Rodriguez. He is a life member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and a member of the Canary Islands Descendants Association.

In July of 2006, Bishop Giffin was honored by HM Queen Elizabeth II when he was made a Member (MStJ) of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, a British order of chivalry (www.saintjohn.org). He has since been promoted to the rank of Officer (OStJ). He is a life member of the Royal Scots Club (www.royalscotsclub.com) in Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as a life member of The Austin Club, Austin, Texas. Bishop Giffin is armigerous, having been granted a coat of arms in November 2013 by the Chief Herald of Ireland.
